Dear Ocean is a reading series based in New York City. Founded in the summer of 2019 and originally supported through a residency by Human Impacts Institute and the Williamsburg Public Library, Dear Ocean is a reading series that centers the voices of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) writers who are writing about the climate crisis and environmental justice. Our mission is to challenge dominant narratives and foster conversations that prioritize the lived experiences of those who are most impacted by the effects of climate change. Through our events, we aim to create a space where diverse communities can come together to share their work, connect with one another, and inspire collective action towards a more sustainable and equitable future. We recognize that the voices of BIPOC writers are essential to creating a more just and inclusive environmental movement, and we are committed to uplifting these voices in all aspects of our work. If you’d like to be one of our featured readers for an upcoming event, send 3-5 poems to dear.ocean.nyc@gmail.com
